KOTA BARU: The state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) today will start its repair works along the 70 metres of the Sungai Kelantan riverbank, which was damaged by soil erosion on Dec 16.
Kota Lama assemblyman Dr Hafidzah Mustakim said she was informed of the development by state DID director Dr Siti Fairus Zakaria during their phone conversation this morning.
"During our phone conversation, the director has told me that the repair works at Jalan Pos Office Lama will start today.
"I'm not sure the scope of the repair works, but this emergency measure will include repairs on the slope to prevent further erosion.
"I was informed that the soil erosion has affected nearly 1,600 traders in Pelangi Mall," she told reporters while visiting the scene today.
Present was Pelangi Mall joint management board chairman Foo Chek Yee.
Hafidzah said the measure showed that all federal agencies, as well as the state government and local municipal council, were concerned about the safety of the affected residents and those staying in surrounding areas.
"The situation along the riverbank will be back to normal now. Before this, residents are worried about their safety" he added.
Foo thanked DID for starting the repair works today.
"There are 420 units in the mall and many of us are worried of more soil erosion if this situation was left unchecked," he added.
