Police initiate Op Lancar to manage holiday traffic surge

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (JSPT) has initiated Op Lancar to manage the expected 2.1 million vehicles on roads nationwide daily during the Christmas and school holidays.

Op Lancar, from today to Jan 2, aims to reduce congestion on major routes, including the North-South Expressway and East Coast Expressway.

The anticipated surge in traffic also comes as the government had announced that light vehicles travelling on highways would exempt from tolls today and tomorrow.

"We expect extraordinary pressure on our highway network. Commercial vehicles should consider using federal and state roads to ease congestion on major highways," said JSPT director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

JSPT has set up operations rooms at district and state police headquarters to manage traffic incidents and reports of congestion.

It encourages motorists to remain courteous and disciplined during the holidays.
