JOHOR BARU: The Larkin Aquatic centre, closed since August last year, was reopened to the public, today (Jan 1).
The facility had to be closed after an E.coli outbreak in July last year, believed due to the rust contamination on the flooring of its main swimming and diving pools.
Johor State Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development, and Cooperatives committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said upgrading work including replacement of the pool floors, were completed in November last year.
"The state Health Department monitored the pools' water quality for a month in December.
"The officers confirmed that both the chlorine and bacteria levels met the public swimming pool safety guidelines," he said in a statement, today.
The guidelines, outlined by the Health Ministry, required consistent chlorine levels to effectively disinfect the water and prevent the spread of waterborne illnesses.
Bacterial levels, such as coliform and E.coli, must also remain within permissible limits to ensure public safety.
Hairi said mandatory regular water sampling and testing would be done to ensure the water safety guidelines were kept.
The pool will be closed to the public every Wednesday to undergo thorough cleaning.
The centre will operate daily between 8am and 11pm except on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, when it closes at 9pm.
