Education pathway for GISB children being realigned

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry is taking steps to "realign" the education pathways for children under the care of Global Ikhwan Services and Business (GISB) Holdings.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry is focused on ensuring these children receive appropriate education.

She added that realigning the children's education pathways aims to help them transition into mainstream education.

"We will realign their education, taking into account their age and suitability for continuing their studies in public schools," she added.

Previously, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said 136 GISB children had not been claimed by their families.

The children remain under the care of the Social Welfare Department.

The children were placed in these institutions in accordance with Section 25(2)(a) of the Child Act, which relates to the care and protection of children.

GISB came under the spotlight last year after police conducted a series of raids on 20 welfare homes in Selangor and Negri Sembilan linked to the organisation.

A total of 402 people, mostly children and teenagers, were rescued.

Police said initial investigations indicated elements of child labour, abuse, and neglect.

GISB has denied the allegations.
