Puspakom seeks dashcam footage of detached tyre in Ayer Keroh crash

KUALA LUMPUR: The Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) is appealing for public cooperation from those who possess dashboard camera (dashcam) recordings or information regarding the location of a detached lorry tyre involved in the recent accident at Kilometre 204 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) to come forward and assist the authorities.

Puspakom chief executive officer Mahmood Razak Bahman said he hopes the information will aid in completing the investigation to identify the cause of the incident.

"I urge anyone with dashcam recordings from before, during, or after the accident, particularly footage showing the tyre being moved from the accident site, to submit it to the police.

"This evidence is crucial to assist the investigation so the victims' families and the public can find closure and put an end to this tragedy.

"According to Puspakom's initial report, the detached lorry tyre is believed to have come loose due to damage to a small axle and was on the middle of the road at the time of the incident, as confirmed by the driver and witnesses," he said in a statement.

Regarding the use of retreaded tyres, Mahmood said it is irresponsible to use such products if they do not meet standards, as it endangers the lives of drivers and road users.

"In our efforts to ensure road safety, commercial vehicle owners must also ensure that the tyres they use comply with durability and safety standards set by the government.

"The use of non-compliant retreaded tyres is utterly irresponsible," he said.

Yesterday, police confirmed that the tyre of a tanker lorry which detached during a crash that claimed seven lives in Melaka last month, was not sent for inspection at Puspakom.

Alor Gajah police chief Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah said they were unable to locate the tyre during an investigation at the scene of the accident.

The collision, which occurred on Dec 24, 2024, involved three vehicles, claiming seven lives and injuring 33.
