BUTTERWORTH: The Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) has addressed several viral videos showing a dog capturing operation in Taman Keenways yesterday.
The operation, according to MBSP, was part of an ongoing effort to address complaints about stray animals in hotspot areas across Seberang Prai.
The city council emphasised that the operation was carried out by a trained team using an approved anaesthetic method in compliance with the standard operating procedures (SOP) for Animal Capture and Disposal under the Housing and Local Government Ministry's circular, No. 5/2014.
"MBSP confirmed that the capture methods align with the Animal Welfare Act 2015 and the Code of Practice for Animal Welfare in Stray Animal Control Activities.
"MBSP stresses that the capture was carried out with full care and attention, ensuring no cruelty, violence, or abuse occurred during the operation. All captured dogs were safely transported to the MBSP Animal Holding Pen after the operation," it said today.
MBSP said after being captured, all dogs underwent health checks by a registered veterinarian.
"The results showed that the animals had fully recovered from sedation, were in good health, and were free of injuries.
"The captured dogs will be kept at the holding pen for a mandatory period before being transferred to the SPCA's permanent shelter for adoption, should there be no claims for the animals.
"During their stay at the holding facility, the animals will receive proper food, water, and care," it added.
MBSP reminded all dog owners, volunteers, and feeders to be responsible for their animals to prevent public disturbances and complaints.
It further emphasised that all dog captures, neutering, and release (TNR) programme conducted by NGOs in Seberang Prai must be officially registered with and approved by MBSP.
"MBSP reiterated its commitment to balancing public safety with animal welfare and ensuring the well-being of both humans and animals in Seberang Prai," it said.
