#NSTviral: Jalur Gemilang raised in Chicago

KUALA LUMPUR: The Jalur Gemilang was seen raised and flown at the city's Richard J. Daley Centre on National Day (Aug 31).

According to a post by user @IntanEdgar on X, it is an initiative by the city's cultural centre and has been a practice for the last 18 years.

As seen in the user's two videos, the flag-raising was accompanied by the national anthem Negaraku echoing throughout the plaza.

"Celebrating Malaysian Independence Day (Merdeka) by raising the flag of Malaysia and cultural programming," stated the Daley Centre's event scheduling.

Netizens were proud and thankful to see the nation's flag flying high, even across the world in the United States.

"Seriously, Chicago raising the Malaysian flag? Wow!" said user Star.

"Thank you, Chicago," said user Citrapujangga. One user was amused by the similarity of the flag with America's own Star-Spangled Banner.

"The most interesting thing is that our flags are similar. That is unique," said user Awg Danish.

Another user highlighted Malaysia's longstanding diplomatic relationship with the western nation.

"This is the result of having bilateral ties between Malaysia and the US established upon independence in 1957.

"The US is one of Malaysia's oldest and closest allies in military and economic (matters)," said user @maverick_rizz

Earlier, US president Joe Biden extended well wishes to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, and the nation on the country's 67th Independence Day.

The president reiterated the longstanding history of friendship and cooperation with Malaysia, strengthening economic, people-to-people, and security ties.
