MELAKA: A video showing Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry enforcement officers inspecting a roadside fruit stall with a misleading sign has gone viral.
The video, originally posted on the ministry's Melaka branch TikTok account, highlights how the bright yellow sign listed "5kg for RM20" without specifying that the offer applied only to rambutan and dokong, while the duku sold at the stall was actually priced at RM30 for 5kg.
The video showcased the officers firmly explaining how the signage was misleading and could lead to misunderstandings, before forcing stall workers to clarify the signage.
Netizens found the situation relatable and shared their own frequent experiences with misleading signages at local roadside stalls.
"It happened to me so many times when buying durian. From afar, I see '4kg for RM20'. When I stop by, they say that (the sign) was for tempoyak (fermented durian), rather than fresh durian," said user Nina Samsir.
Another user, Mohd Yusof Hasan, said: "Many hawkers pull in customers like that. We only realise when we stop by. I've been a victim too."
Meanwhile, user shah17454 had a slightly different story to share.
"... when I saw (a sign saying) RM10 for a pile of durians. I made a U-turn (towards the stall), but they immediately replaced it with RM20 (for the pile). I left. Did they think I'm that enthusiastic for durian?"
The sentiment was echoed by another user, yann, who stated plainly: "Fruit stalls always lie. Especially (when it involves) durian."
