KUALA LUMPUR: A video featuring the Selangor Road Transport Department (RTD) closely tailing a speeding bus in the fast lane has re-emerged, raising alarms on heavy vehicle accidents and road safety.
The TikTok clip, shared by the RTD Selangor account, captures officers pursuing a bus travelling at high speed in the rightmost lane of the highway, reserved for faster-moving vehicles.
The bus, with its right indicator flashing, overtakes a number of vehicles, including lorries and cars, during the night.
The footage then shifts to the JPJ officers, who successfully signal the bus to pull over.
The accompanying caption indicates that the bus was repeatedly driving in the right lane, which prompted the officers to intervene.
Originally posted in November last year, the video has resurfaced in light of recent heavy vehicle accidents linked to reckless driving, which have resulted in fatalities.
Malaysia's roads are increasingly dangerous, with frequent traffic accidents highlighting the growing risks for motorists and pedestrians alike.
On Dec 23, a tragic collision on the North-South Expressway at kilometre 204 near Ayer Keroh R&R claimed seven lives and left 33 injured, involving a tour bus, a trailer, and a Toyota Estima.
The clip has garnered over 356,000 views and 13,900 likes, sparking outrage among netizens regarding the dangerous behaviour of heavy vehicle drivers on the roads.
User @akhi_zaidan87 said that buses should not use the rightmost lane, as it is reserved for light vehicles travelling over 110km per hour (km/h). They warned that if buses drive too fast and encounter an emergency, it would be challenging for them to control the vehicle, potentially leading to accidents.
@tipuware222 added that there has been an increase in heavy vehicles driving in the rightmost lane, while @nagama994 added that many drivers exhibit similar reckless behaviour, expressing hope that RTD will take action against all offenders.
