KOTA KINABALU: A single-party government is rare in today's world as it takes combined parties - big or small - to get the majority of voters.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin, who is State Umno secretary said this today in response to Parti Warisan Sabah's declaration that it aimed to bring back the one-party system which was successful during Berjaya, Usno and PBS days.
"(Based on) the present trend in world politics, it takes many parties to form a government.. I'm say it's always the case, that theory, but it seems that way.
"You need parties, big or small, to join together as it is difficult to have one party secure the majority of voters at national or state level ... Small parties have their influence, some others have theirs based on the support they have and we in Barisan Nasional especially in Sabah believe this," he told reporters after attending a welcoming dinner for orphans here.
Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking recently declared that the party is keen to contest on their own strength in the coming elections to enable a single-party government should they emerge victorious, thus eliminating issues of dissatisfaction among component parties in a power-sharing structure.
Darell claimed that Sabah component parties are only 'big in numbers' but play minor roles in the BN administration.
Yahya, in response, said that is the Opposition's opinion.
"We in BN do not look into whether the party is big or small; as long as our struggles are the same we are all appreciated and treated the same," he said.
