KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah has proposed former Chief Justice Tun Richard Malanjum as the next Yang di-Pertua Negeri (TYT) of Sabah, succeeding Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, whose term concludes on Dec 31.
Warisan vice-president Terrence Siambun said Malanjum was appointed as an ombudsman to the United Nations Security Council on Feb 14, 2022.
"With his unparalleled legal expertise, commitment to justice, and dedication to the well-being of all Sabahans, he is an exemplary candidate for this esteemed role," said Terrence.
Malanjum made history as the first East Malaysian to serve as the Chief Justice of Malaysia and has consistently demonstrated a commitment to fairness, equality, and upholding the Constitution, he said.
"Malanjum tenure was marked by respect for Malaysia's constitutional framework, including the recognition of Islam as the religion of the federation while safeguarding the rights of all communities," he said.
He said the proposal to appoint Malanjum as the next governor does not jeopardise Islam's position in Sabah.
"As guaranteed by the Federal Constitution, Islam's status as the religion of the Federation remains intact and respected," he said.
He said Malanjum's advocacy for unity highlights his inclusive approach to leadership, which fosters respect for all communities without compromising Islam's position.
"These examples reaffirm that his appointment would preserve and strengthen the spirit of harmony and respect for Islam and all faiths in Sabah," he said.
He said the appointment of Malanjum would also reflect Sabah's unique identity as a harmonious and diverse state, serving as a bridge to further unity and understanding among its multiracial and multi-religious communities.
Terrence said the proposal was made to foster unity, celebrate Sabah's diversity, and ensure good governance for all Sabahans.
He believed that Malanjum's candidacy would resonate with the people's aspirations and contribute to Sabah's continued growth and harmony.
Meanwhile, the KadazanDusun Cultural Association (KDCA) also had its proposed candidate, Huguan Siou (Kadazandusun Murut paramount leader) Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, to be considered as the next governor.
Juhar has held the position for four terms since 2011.
His tenure was extended when Parti Warisan amended the Sabah Constitution in 2018 to allow unlimited terms instead of the prior two-term restriction.
