Kota Baru council staff attacked for removing political party flag

KOTA BARU: A Kota Baru Municipal Council (MPKB) secretary and staff were injured after they were attacked by three men while removing a political party's flag here yesterday.

Nik Muhamed Noor, 57, and MPKB assistant admin Hanapi Salleh, 50, were working with five others when the incident happened about 8.45am.

Nik Muhamed said he and Hanapi who were punched in the face. Their assailants had also hit him on his head with a piece of wood. Both received outpatient treatments at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital.

Recalling the incident, he said the three men approached them when they were removing the flags, which were hung without a permit.

"They started to insult us and warned us not to take down the flags but when I told them that it is an offence to hang flags without the council's permit, they started to attack us," he said.

Meanwhile, Kota Baru police chief Assistant Commissioner Ismail Mat Sidik confirmed a report on the incident has been lodged by Hanapi about 7.20pm.

"Investigation into the case is still ongoing and so far, we have yet to make any arrest," he said.
