SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council deputy chairman, Robert Lau Hui Yew has been appointed as a senator representing Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP).
The appointment of Lau, who is also Bawang Assan SUPP branch chairman, was announced by Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Abang Openg at a dinner event with the Chinese community here this evening.
Abang Johari, who is also Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said Lau’s appointment reflected the ruling coalition’s vision for greater voice representing the Sibu people.
“I hope the two BN candidates contesting at parliamentary seats in the Sibu division will win the contest.
“We want to have more representatives from Sarawak including from Sibu in Parliament. That is why we had appointed Robert Lau as a Senator,” said Abang Johari in his speech.
He also called on BN election machineries to work on ensuring the ruling coalition’s candidate could wrest the Sibu and Lanang parliamentary seats from DAP.
BN is fielding Datuk Andrew Wong Kee Yew and Kelvin Kong Sien Chiu for the contest at the Sibu and Lanang parliamentary seats respectively.
When met after the announcement, Lau said he was thankful to Abang Johari and the Sarawak BN top leadership for their trust.
“I was informed on the proposal over my appointment few hours before dinner.
“I am very elated as this appointment will provide me more room to highlight the aspiration of the people in Sibu,” he said.
Lau is a relative to former Deputy Transport Minister, Robert Lau Hoi Chew.
