KUALA LUMPUR: In the excitement of various quarters attempting to defend their space after the 14th General Election (GE14), a PAS leader has reminded all political parties in the country to not offend or disrespect the royal institution.
The Islamist party's deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the royal institution was the only institution free from any sentiment or influence, and thus no one should cross the line regardless of any political dispute.
“PAS would like to advise all parties and politicians to respect the royal institution. We should be careful and ensure that our actions do not affect the royal institution.
“When it is affected, the people will lose a place for them to take shelter, especially when the characters and political parties become too arrogant beyond reproach,” he said in a statement today.
Recently, Perlis Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim and nine Barisan Nasional (BN) state assemblymen in Perlis incurred the wrath of the state ruler for refusing to back new Perlis MB Datuk Seri Azlan Man’s appointment.
This led to a political turmoil in Perlis, after it was announced that Azlan will be sacked as Umno member just hours before he was sworn in.
On Thursday, King of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail said that he did not appoint Shahidan’s brother, Datuk Ismail Kassim as MB because he feared that the state government would be rendered as “mere puppets”.
Yesterday, the Perlis royal family lodged a police report against Shahidan and the nine BN assemblymen and urged them to formally apologise to Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin.
