Independent candidate pulls out of Sg Kandis by-election at 11th hour [NSTTV]

SHAH ALAM: Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) member Ahmad Kamaruddin, who had intended to contest in the Sungai Kandis by-election, withdrew from the nomination process here this morning.

Ahmad, who arrived at the Shah Alam City Council’s Dewan Teratai in Section 19 at 9.30am said he decided against contesting, as he had originally thought that Barisan Nasional (BN) would not field a candidate.

The 41-year-old said his move is meant to pave the way for a straight fight between PKR and BN.

“When I wanted to register at 9.45am, I received a call from PRM’s top leadership to refrain from doing so. I accepted the decision (and now) there will be a fierce fight between PKR and BN.

“My presence here is not a gimmick, as I have the letter of appointment to contest which was signed by PRM sec-gen Koh Swe Yong three days ago.

“I feel it’s important for a one-on-one fight to take place in the Sungai Kandis state seat by-election,” said the self-employed man.

Ahmad claimed that this was not the first time he had registered as an election candidate, as he had contested against Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali for the Bukit Antarabangsa state seat in the 14th general election.
