KUALA LUMPUR: Former Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak today said he was confident that Umno could be revived and rejuvenated under the new leadership.
In a message to his successor and Umno party members, he said this year’s Umno General Assembly 2018 would be a constructive affair where members could exchange views, debate and celebrate differences of opinions while staying united.
“This is the time, more than ever the party needs you and you people are the members who have proven your loyalty by standing by the party even at the party’s most difficult times, ” he said in a Facebook post.
He said members should not be disheartened but instead use it as an opportunity to revive the party.
”Even though it’s bitter to swallow, let’s look at it positively as an opportunity for us to rise again, to re-evaluate the core of our struggle, as well as to know who among us truly loves the party and who’s there are only for self-interest,” wrote Najib.
“Nevertheless, I believe Umno members, from all over the country who attended this time are the real loyal members.
“Leaders can come and go but the purpose of our struggle should not be compromised. You are the ones who truly love Umno and I’m sure you all will defend the oldest party in the country and uphold the party and its struggles, for what may come.”
Najib said it was alright for members to debate, argue, discuss and voice their views at the party’s AGM so long as it was in the best interest of the party.
“I’m confident that Umno, led by President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be able to overcome all the obstacles that come and stay united for the sake of the people, race, nation and unity,” he said.
Najib lauded the announcement of Zahid’s shadow cabinet that they wished to continue being the people’s voice and championing the national agenda by guiding and supporting the new leaders based on their experience.
He also called on Umno members to always refer to the teachings and practices of Islam and the Quran, especially at trying times like this.
