Warisan has lost a respected leader, says party sec-gen

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) has extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Datuk Liew Vui Keong.

In a statement, party secretary-general Datuk Loretto Padua Jr said Warisan is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of its permanent chairman.

He said funeral arrangements would be made known in due course.

"Party president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has been informed of the sad news and extends his deepest condolences to Datin Lindai Lee and her four children.

"The party has lost a well respected leader who had contributed to the country and the state through his hard work and dedication," he said.

Loretto added that Liew's family had requested their privacy be respected as they grieve during this difficult time.

Liew, who is former minister in the prime minister's department (law), had not been seen in public since the announcement of Warisan's party's candidates in the state election.

However, prior to that, Liew had been actively involved in preparing for the election after the dissolution of the state assembly in July.

In KUALA LUMPUR, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has also expressed its condolences to Liew's family.

PKR secretary-general, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, conveyed the party's condolences through a media statement released today.

"Liew was a former minister in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government who was dedicated and committed to reforming the country's legal system, including reforms on our prison system and death penalty.

"His demise is a great loss for the Dewan Rakyat and our nation's politics," he said.

Saifuddin said, PKR hopes that Liew's family would be strong in their moment of grief.

According to sources from Warisan, Liew who was hospitalised at the Gleaneagles Hospital in Sabah, passed away at 11.50am today.

Liew, from Kota Belud, was elected as Batu Sapi Member of Parliament in the 14th General Election and had served as a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department and Warisan Permanent Chairman.
