KOTA BARU: A Pas leader today said the opposition was trying to gain public sympathy by gathering at Dataran Merdeka to protest against the postponement of the special Dewan Rakyat sitting.
Party vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said he believed opposition leaders wanted to "play politics again" by holding the march to the Parliament building.
"To me, they are wasting their time. The real issue is that these leaders want to gain sympathy from the rakyat.
"If they really want to attend the sitting to continue with the debate, why didn't they do it when they had the chance before?
"Instead, they kept on arguing at the recent sitting without realising they had actually wasted their time," he said.
The Panchor assemblyman told this to reporters after presenting cash aid to some 50 orphans here today.
Mohd Amar, who is also Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar said opposition leaders should have grabbed the opportunity during the recent sitting to continue with their debates if they truly wanted to look after the interests of the people.
It was reported that opposition members of parliament gathered at Dataran Merdeka this morning to protest the postponement of the special Dewan Rakyat sitting.
The government's decision to cancel the Dewan Rakyat special sitting at the last minute was met with criticism, with opposition MPs calling the Perikatan Nasional government and Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to exit Putrajaya.
According to the government, a number of Covid-19 positive cases were detected within the parliament compound and due to that, it decided to postpone the sitting to avoid further spread of the virus in Parliament.
