KANGAR: Perikatan Nasional (PN) component party Pas has hinted that it may use its own logo in the 15th general election (GE15).
The Islamic party's spiritual leader, Datuk Hashim Jasin, said that since its logo's moon image symbolises cleanliness, the move would prove advantageous to its candidates.
"Using the logo is expected to be helpful to our candidates in securing victory. It has been known for the past 70 years.
"This differs from the Johor and Melaka state elections, where we used the PN symbol. Voters were confused because they thought it was Barisan Nasional (BN). We will leave it to the PN Presidential Council to determine its use," he said today.
Meanwhile, Perlis PN chairman Mohd Shuri Ramli said the idea of Pas using its own logo for GE15 was the personal opinion of the party's spiritual leader.
Shukri, who is Perlis Pas commissioner, said the matter had yet to be decided by the Pas or PN leadership.
"That is his view. Pas has yet to decide on the matter at the party level.
"PN had yet to finalise the logo that will be used and the seats that will be contested in GE15," he said when contacted today.
Perlis Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman Abu Bakar Hamzah said he was confident that the PN logo used by his party and Pas in the state polls would continue to be utilised in GE15.
"Maybe that is just his (Hashim's) suggestion. So far, at the PN level, there is no official ruling to use the logo or flag of any party (for GE15). We will continue to use the PN logo.
"There is no directive from the Bersatu president and PN chairman. We are waiting because, in the recent PN Presidential Council meeting, (Bersatu president) Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that PN still exists and there was no decision to use our flag," said the deputy Perlis PN chairman.
Shukri said there might be a proposal from the PN Presidential Council to change to a new logo for the coalition as PN did not have a logo.
He said that needed to be considered, but it should still be centred on PN.
Yesterday, it was reported that Pas Central Committee member Dr Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki had said the Islamic party needed to use its logo to achieve victory in GE15.
He had said flexibility should be given, especially in strongholds or those seats with the potential to win, specifically in East Coast states and states with a large Malay population.
He had said that during the Melaka and Johor state polls, Pas contested under the PN logo in the spirit of consensus.
