GOMBAK: It will not be easy task to contest against the heavyweights at the Gombak parliamentary seat but Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin does not see it as an impossible mission.
He said every candidate has an equal chance to convince the voters in the constituency although the big names have a slight advantage when it comes to funds and allocations.
"I have to admit that it is not going to be an easy task. I don't want to be seen overconfident but it is not a possible task because we have been serving the people here since 2018 after the last general election. (And) we have the supporters that will continue to vote for BN," he told reporters after the nomination process had ended.
Megat Zulkarnain said Gombak used to be served by a member of parliament from BN.
"I believe that 70 per cent of the voters in Gombak have already made up their minds on who they will vote for. (And) now it is up to the candidates, who can make the best finishing," he said.
The Gombak parliamentary seat is a five-cornered fight between Megat Zulkarnain, incumbent Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali from Perikatan Nasional (PN), Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari of Pakatan Harapan (PH), Datuk Dr Aziz Jamaludin Mhd Tahir (Pejuang) and Zulkifli Ahmad who is standing as an Independent.
In the 14th general election, Azmin polled 75,113 votes on the PKR ticket against Datuk Abdul Rahim Kamarudin from BN and Khairil Nizam from Pas. He had secured a majority of 48,721 votes.
However, in March 2020, he led 10 MPs from PKR to defect to Bersatu, in what has come to be known as the Sheraton Move.
Polling day for GE15 is set for Nov 19, with early voting on Nov 15.
