KUALA LUMPUR: The entire Barisan Nasional leadership should take responsibility for the coalition's devastating defeat in the 15th General Election (GE15), Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Bung Moktar said.
He said if the party felt that Umno president and BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should resign and take responsibility, other leaders should follow suit.
Bung said this when asked if it was reasonable for BN leaders to pressure Zahid to step down.
"I don't think it will come to that (Zahid stepping down). We will discuss it.
"Actually, the entire leadership must take responsibility because it (strategies for GE15) was a collective decision.
"So if (others) want (Zahid) to resign then everybody must resign too, including me," he told reporters when met at the World Trade Centre here today.
Describing yesterday's loss as "the worst in Umno and BN history", Bung said it was important for the coalition to transform to ensure its survival.
"We must be pragmatic in deciding our future. Leadership lineups will always change and we must ensure Umno and BN will continue to provide a breath of fresh air to the people and we will think of the best way to ensure the party will survive.
"Yes, the people rejected us although we offered stability. So now, we will have to make efforts in other ways."
When asked if today's Umno political bureau meeting had made any decision on which party it would align itself with to form the next government, Bung said it had yet to be decided.
"We haven't decided yet on that. We will have to discuss it first."
