Let the GPS leadership decide on DPM post - Nanta

KUALA LUMPUR: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) component parties are leaving it to the leadership of the Borneo state political coalition leadership on the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) post.

GPS Secretary-General Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said issues related to the post can only be decided by the leadership of the coalition, which would be done soon.

"That matter, I leave it to the decision of the main leadership in GPS.

"So far I have no comment on the matter," he said when contacted today.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that priority on the DPM post would be given to the largest component parties in his unity government, namely Barisan Nasional (BN) and GPS, which garnered 30 and 23 parliamentary seats respectively in the 15th General Election (GE15).

The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PPB) secretary-general said the common rights of the people of Sarawak should be given priority.

The Kapit Member of Parliament hopes that the rights of the people of Sarawak could be further enhanced, under the unity government, including for infrastructure development, public and private services, education and health medicine.

"Apart from that, I hope to see more public service officers or government-related companies' (GLCs) posts be given opportunities to the people of Sarawak, which was previously small.

"We are confident that many public and private (sector) servants from the Sarawak Bumiputera community are credible and qualified to hold such positions," he said.

He said the formation of a unity government was also seen as very important for the country not only to restore the national economy but also to create political stability and harmony among the people.

The former Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister said to provide the best for the country, the issue of racial and religious sensitivities should also not arise. He reminded Malaysia was a harmonious country.

"As a leader from the Dayak community, I also hope that the government led by Anwar would bring about hope to the people, especially to the Bumi Kenyalang state.

"Hopefully, the Dayak community would be given better treatment than before, in education, public service and an open path for them to take the lead in the business field." he said.
