Hishammuddin: What is happening in Umno?

KUALA LUMPUR: The issue of the no contest motion for the top two posts in Umno in this year party's election continues to be a controversial issue and questioned by some leaders.

Sembrong member of Parliament Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein is wondering what is happening in Umno after claiming that the party is dragging Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail into the issue.

"What is happening with Umno? Now they are dragging in the Home Minister.

"This is why we are fired and suspended, just in case the minister did not grant the exemption," said Hishammuddin in the comment section of a tweet by former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Hishammuddin is currently under-going a six year suspension from Umno while Khairy was fired from the party in January.

The polemic regarding the no contest for the posts of Umno president and deputy president began when the 2022 Umno General Assembly approved an additional resolution that was allegedly made not according to the proper procedure.

Subsequently, on January 20, two Umno members lodged a complaint with the Registrar of Societies regarding the resolution which they claimed to be invalid and against the party constitution.

On Tuesday. Saifuddin said that the ministry had decided to grant an exemption from compliance of Section 13(1)(c)(iv) of the Societies Act 1966 regarding the decision of the additional motion that had been approved at the PAU 2022 with regards to no-contest for the posts of president and deputy president in the upcoming Umno election.

He said the decision was made pursuant to Section 70 of the Act, which states that the minister may at his discretion in writing exempt any society registered under this Act from all or any of the provisions of this Act.

Under Section 13(1)(c)(iv) of the Act, the Registrar may cancel the registration of any society that has wilfully contravened any provision of this Act.
