KUALA LUMPUR: Merlimau assemblyman Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has been elected as the new Umno Youth chief.
According to the unofficial results, the Melaka Health committee chairman obtained votes from 102 of 189 divisions to defeat three other candidates vying for the post in the party election.
The matter was confirmed by outgoing Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki .
"Alhamdulillah. Unofficial results showed Dr Akmal has won the Umno Youth chief post for the 2023-2026 term. He has obtained votes from 102 divisions, which exceeds the simple majority of 96 votes," said Asyraf in a posting on his Facebook account.
The matter was also shared by Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan in a posting on his Twitter account.
He defeated former deputy finance minister Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Armand Azha Abu Hanifah and Meor Hassan Mat Ali.
The Youth chief post fell vacant after Asyraf announced that he would not defend the post.
