Penang CM: I will seek audience with Yang di-Pertua Negeri on June 27 over state assembly dissolution

GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has reiterated that he will seek an audience with Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak on June 27 to obtain consent to dissolve the Penang state assembly.

"Yes, yes, I will have an audience with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri on June 27 to inform him about the dissolution and for him to sign the proclamation of the dissolution for the following day.

"The Yang di-Pertua Negeri acts on the advice of the state government," he said during a durian feast here today.

Chow previously announced that the Penang state assembly would be dissolved on June 28 to pave the way for elections.

In February, the chief minister of Penang and menteri besar of Kedah, Kelantan, Negri Sembilan, Selangor and Terengganu had all agreed to dissolve their respective state assemblies within the last two weeks of June.

Penang has 40 state seats.

In the 2018 general election, Pakatan Harapan (PH) won 37 seats when Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) was still part of the coalition while Barisan Nasional won two seats and Pas, one

However, the four assemblymen from Bersatu, namely Seberang Jaya, Sungai Acheh, Teluk Bahang and Bertam, were forced to vacate their seats after a motion was passed in accordance with the state's anti-hopping law.
