Dr M, Muhyiddin set aside differences to meet over Malay Proclamation

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad met with Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin last night to establish cooperation on the Malay Proclamation movement.

It is understood that the meeting lasted for nearly two hours at Dr Mahathir's residence here.

The meeting is believed to be the first since the Sheraton Move in February 2020, which resulted in the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government led by Dr Mahathir before Muhyiddin took over as premier.

The meeting follows Selangor PN chairman Datuk Seri Azmin Ali meeting with Dr Mahathir, where they also discussed Malay issues.

Muhyiddin and Azmin were among the key political leaders who initiated the Sheraton Move.

Last night's meeting was also attended by Secretariat of the Malay Proclamation chairman Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan.

Khairuddin, in a statement, said the meeting would provide a fresh impetus to the Malay Proclamation, driving its agenda and strengthening the position of the citizens (Malays) .

"The willingness of both Malay leaders to set aside all past political differences is to ensure the struggle to empower the position of the citizens in this blessed land continues.

"The admirable qualities of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will become a new pillar of support for the Malays, who yearn for absolute Malay unity or solidarity.

"The Malay community is demanding effective unity to empower the position of the nation's children, so that they become a respected community by all, both domestically and internationally," he added.

Last week, it was reported that the former Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) chairman intended to meet with the Pagoh MP to explain the purpose of the proclamation.

Prior to that, Dr Mahathir had also expressed his willingness to cooperate with Muhyiddin in the upcoming state elections.

In response, Muhyiddin expressed his readiness to cooperate with Dr Mahathir in fighting for the fate of the Malays and Islam.

He added that this readiness is driven by the current political developments which have placed the Malay and Islamic communities in this country at a critical crossroads.

Currently, Dr Mahathir heads the Malay Proclamation, which has the support of Muhyiddin and PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

Khairuddin further stated that Dr Mahathir's sincere intention has garnered extraordinary support from Malays across the country.

"We only wish to discuss and resolve Malay issues based on the 'rights' of the Malays as enshrined in the Federal Constitution," he added.
