'Hulu Kelang safe seat for Juwairiya'

Just days before the state election Nomination Day on Saturday, Pakatan Harapan lynchpin PKR unveiled a candidate lineup with a majority of fresh faces for its stronghold of Selangor.

The most interesting candidate for political observers is Wanita PKR deputy chief Juwairiya Zulkifli, who will contest Hulu Kelang, a surprise as the seat is traditionally contested by PH component Parti Amanah Negara.

During PKR's election candidate announcement on Saturday, party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim introduced a lineup that included 11 new faces among the 20 who will be fielded.

The new faces include rapper Altimet, whose real name is Syed Ahmad Syed Abdul Rahman Alhadad, who will contest the Lembah Jaya seat; Phua Lei Lei, who will replace Elizabeth Wong in Bukit Lanjan; Kuala Selangor division chief Thiban Subramanian, who will replace Juwairiya in Bukit Melawati; and, David Cheong, who will replace Lee Hoy Sian in Kajang.

PKR is also fielding one of its youngest candidates so far, 25-year-old Erni Afrishah Azizi, in the Sementah seat.

Juwairiya's move to Hulu Kelang is notable because it is widely expected that former Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman and Perikatan Nasional bigwig Datuk Seri Azmin Ali will contest there.

But sources said the seat might prove to be an "easy and safe" battle for Juwairiya as the people were unhappy with Azmin.

Political analyst and Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research senior fellow Dr Azmi Hassan said the seat change for Juwairiya was a good move that would make it difficult for Azmin to win.

He said Azmin would have a tough time defending his Bukit Antarabangsa seat and might move to a different constituency.

"Azmin is not popular in the Bukit Antarabangsa or Hulu Kelang state seats, or even the Gombak parliamentary seat.

"He had a very difficult time when he was a member of parliament or the state assemblyman.

"As PKR is fielding Mohd Kamri Kamaruddin in Bukit Antarabangsa, it will be a tough fight for Azmin as Kamri is a local boy who is very active on the ground and knows the people well."

Speculation that PKR will not field former Kota Damansara assemblyman Shatiri Mansor to defend the seat was confirmed.

The seat will be contested by law graduate Aidi Amin Yazid, who is political secretary to Sungai Buloh member of parliament Datuk R. Ramanan.

Party insiders said Aidi was fielded due to his dedication to doing groundwork and his services in the constituency.

PKR will retain Azmizam Zaman Huri for the Port Klang seat, quashing rumours that he would be replaced by a younger candidate.

Other former assemblymen who will defend their seats include caretaker Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amiruddin Shari in Sungai Tua, Najwan Halimi in Kota Anggerik, Gunarajah R. George in Sentosa, Borhan Aman Shah in Tanjong Sepat and Khairuddin Othman in Paya Jaras.
