Voter turnout drops in five states, Kedah bucks the trend

PUTRAJAYA: Five out of six states that went to the ballot boxes yesterday recorded a lower voter turnout this time than the turnout in the 14th General Election.

According to Election Commission (EC) figures, only Kedah saw a slight increase in voter turnout at 73.86 per cent yesterday, higher than the previous 72.8 per cent in 2018.

However, Terengganu, Penang, and Selangor recorded a drop of between 0.33 per cent and 3.5 per cent after the three states reported turnouts of 74.79 per cent, 72.67 per cent and 72 per cent, respectively.

Voter turnouts had also declined in Negri Sembilan and Kelantan. Based on data, there was a 5.15 decrease in Negri Sembilan, where the turnout was at 68.35 per cent, and a drop of 6.24 per cent in Kelantan, from 67.2 per cent in 2018 to 60.96 per cent yesterday.
