Bersatu suspends Labuan MP's membership for 6 years for backing PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia has suspended the party membership of Labuan member of parliament Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman for six years, effective immediately.

Suhaili, who had recently declared support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's unity government, has also been suspended from all his positions.

Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the decision was made by the party disciplinary board which met today.

He said Suhaili, who was Bersatu Labuan division and Federal Territories chief, was deemed to have gone against the party constitution.

"After scrutinising evidentiary documents and taking into account the seriousness of the offences as well as the implications and impact to the party and the media statement made by Suhaili on Oct 30, the disciplinary board deemed him guilty of Phase 22.1(f) of the Bersatu Constitution.

"As such, the disciplinary board unanimously decided to use its powers under Phase 22.5(c) of the party constitution to suspend Suhaili's party membership.

"This includes all positions he holds in the party for six years, effective from the date of the decision, which is Nov 7, 2023 (today)," he said in a statement.

On Oct 30, Suhaili had declared his support for the unity government, saying the decision was made after taking into consideration the grievances of the people of Labuan who are burdened by the rising cost of living and persistent water and power disruptions.

Two days ago, Bersatu had suspended the membership of another MP who had declared support for Anwar, Kuala Kangsar's Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid, for four years.
