Sungai Bakap polls: PN to unveil its candidate on June 16

KUALA LUMPUR: The Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition will officially announce its candidate for the upcoming Sungai Bakap by-election on June 16.

Pas deputy president, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, hinted at the announcement without specifying the party within the coalition that will field the candidate.

"Pas held a political bureau meeting to strategise groundwork in Sungai Bakap, along with receiving reports from the Central Election Department.

"Whereas PN will hold a meeting next Tuesday to coordinate the efforts at the coalition level where the candidate announcement will later take place on June 16.

"The launch of the election machinery will also be held in the near future," he told the New Straits Times.

The deputy president also emphasised the mobilisation of machinery by Pas and PN immediately after the vacancy arose in the Sungai Bakap state assembly seat.

"Even while the late assemblyman was undergoing medical treatment, his service centre continued to operate, attending to the voters and the people of Sungai Bakap.

The Sungai Bakap by-election was necessitated by the unfortunate passing of Pas' Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24.

The Election Commission (EC) has set polling day for July 6, with candidate nominations set for June 22 and early voting on July 2.

Zamri, who won the Sungai Bakap state seat in the 2023 state polls, secured a victory with a 1,563-vote majority against PKR's Nurhidayah Che Rus.
