Sg Bakap polls: BN maps out strategy to ensure victory for unity gov't candidate - Zambry

KUALA TERENGGANU: Barisan Nasional (BN) will map out a strategy to help the unity government candidate wrest back the Sungai Bakap state seat in the July 6 by-election.

BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said he is confident that the unity government stands a good chance to emerge victorious since Pas only won by a 1,563-vote majority in the state election last August.

"We need to work in an organised manner and with a good strategy. Insya-Allah, we have a good chance (to win).

"We held our first meeting last week that was chaired by the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) and it focused on Sungai Bakap (by-election). And all component (parties) in the government have given their commitment to turn up to assist the candidate," he told reporters after officiating the Terengganu state BN Convention here today.

On Wednesday (June 12), Institut Aminuddin Baki (Northern Branch) director Dr Joohari Ariffin of PKR was announced as the unity government's candidate for the Sungai Bakap state by-election.

The Election Commission (EC) has set July 6 for the Sungai Bakap by-election, with nominations slated for June 22. Early voting is on July 2.

The Sungai Bakap seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24 due to a stomach inflammation.

In another development, Zambry called on BN in all states to take proactive measures in explaining the unity government's policies and actions through various mediums to avoid negative sentiments among the people.

"We need to give feedback and explanations that the measures taken by the government in certain matters are because the government is thinking about the implications in the future and we need to deal with this initial reaction.

"So, I view this as the approach taken by the Terengganu BN, which is that we know the sentiments that exist, so we need to collaborate to resolve them," he said. – BERNAMA
