KOTA BARU: Kelantan Umno is gearing up to recapture the Nenggiri state seat if a by-election occurs.
Its information chief Datuk Zawawi Othman said that they were prepared for the possibility of a by-election following the recent announcement of the Nenggiri state seat vacancy.
"If a by-election occurs following yesterday's announcement, we are ready to face the situation.
"Umno might contest the seat, and we are ready to field the best candidate to regain it. We will carry out our responsibilities as best as we can, and the rest is up to the people to judge," he said.
Yesterday, the Kelantan state assembly speaker, Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah, announced the vacancy of the Nenggiri state seat, citing Phase Three of Article 31(A) of the state constitution. This follows a written notice that Mohd Azizi Abu Naim lost his Bersatu membership.
The Election Commission will have a special meeting to address the Nenggiri by-election on June 28.
Zawawi added that the people could judge Umno's performance while holding the seat compared to the representative from Perikatan Nasional (PN).
