NIBONG TEBAL: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has vowed to bring more development to Sungai Bakap if Pakatan Harapan's candidate Dr Joohari Ariffin wins in the Sungai Bakap by-election on Saturday.
Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, proposed the immediate setting up of an activity centre for senior citizens, saying that there was none in Seberang Prai.
He also proposed for the construction of the long-awaited Tamil school in Sungai Bakap.
"If Joohari wins, I propose for the immediate setting up of an activity centre for senior citizens to help the elderly in Sungai Bakap.
"As for the construction of a Tamil school, I had whispered into the ears of the Education Minister to fulfil the request of the Indian community.
"This is not a political promise. This is my pledge and I will return to help Joohari to bring more development to Sungai Bakap if he wins," he said during the Malam Kasih Bersama Pemimpin programme here last night.
The Umno president and Barisan Nasional chairman said there was a reason for him to be here yesterday (Tuesday) and today (Wednesday).
"I am here to ensure the victory of PH's candidate. A win for him is also a win for Umno, BN.
"His victory is important to the unity government and this means more development for the people of Sungai Bakap. This is why it is important for him to win."
Zahid said, in a much bigger scenario, a win for Joohari in Sungai Bakap is a win for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who was born here.
Meanwhile, Zahid said the Umno and BN election machinery have been on the ground working to ensure Joohari's victory.
Joohari is engaged in a straight fight with Perikatan Nasional's Abidin Ismail for the state seat.
