NST Leader: United Nations Charter

THE Guardian thinks the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a visceral threat to the legal and moral authority of the United Nations.

It cannot be more wrong. What is really a visceral threat to the legal and moral authority of the UN is Israel's continued occupation of Palestine and the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians there.

Here is why. On Friday, in its almost 74 years of existence as a pseudo state, Israel chose the holiest day in the holiest of months and one of the holiest of places to Muslims to unleash its apartheid agenda.

Yet, the usually loud voices of the West that are in the habit of condemning Russia's attacks on Ukraine chose to remain silent.

We tell the West this. You do not care for human rights. You do not care for women's rights. You do not care for the rule of law. Your actions speak louder than your words.

Walk the talk, West, if you want to earn the trust of the rest of the world.

Malaysia, a small nation of 34 million, has rightly put the mighty West to shame by condemning the Zionist regime's attack on the Al-Aqsa mosque.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is right. The international community must renew its commitment to a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestine conflict and put an end to "the systematic and untrammelled acts of aggression of the Israel Occupation Forces against Palestinians of all faiths in their own land".

Palestinians, like the Ukrainians, are fighting for their freedom from illegal occupation. They, like the Ukrainians, who want an independent Ukraine, want an independent Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Why is this difficult? Is it because the Palestinians are not, like the Ukrainians, Europeans? The West is getting it all wrong.

And because of the West, which occupies three of the five permanent seats in the UN Security Council, the UN is getting it all wrong, too. Ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians is as old as the 1880s when the first European Jews began arriving in Palestine at the behest of the West.

Yes, older than the Holocaust. The Holocaust ended long ago, but the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians continues to this very day. Yet, the UN remains a talk shop for the Palestinians. Resolution after UNSC resolution remains unacted upon by the Zionist regime. War crimes continue in the meanwhile.

With impunity such as this, the UN's preamble is a waste of ink and pulp. It talks of saving the world from the scourge of war, yet the UNSC members themselves start many of them.

It talks of the dignity and worth of the human person, yet the UNSC members silently watch the dignity and worth of the Palestinians being robbed by the Zionist regime.

It talks of establishing conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from international law can be maintained, yet again the UNSC members race with each other to breach them.

Let's be blunt. The UN has failed to deliver. For most of its 76 years, it has been impotent. Only one option remains. It must be reformed. Delivering justice to all, not just the Europeans, must be the core purpose of this revamped UN.

Since the West is in dire need of education on what justice is, we offer one. Right things in the right place. Israel in occupied Palestine isn't the right thing in the right place.
