NST Leader: Saving Palestine

Last Monday, Jenin, in the West Bank of Palestine, suffered the worst Israeli incursion in 20 years. Not since 2003 has Jenin seen such aerial and ground bombardments.

What was worse, armoured bulldozers were blocking Palestinian ambulances from ferrying the injured to hospitals, certainly a war crime like the Israeli occupation and incursions. The aim is no secret.

The Zionist regime of Israel, with the undying support of the West led by Britain and the United States, wants the Palestinians to leave so that their land can be taken over by illegal Israeli settlers.

Malaysia would have none of this nonsense and made its protest clear. So did the rest of the Muslim countries.

Other countries that are in the habit of speaking about defending human rights kept their hypocritical silence. To them, persecution is a crime against humanity if the persecuted are of their kind.

Interestingly, some in Malaysia who want the world to know that they, too, are humanitarians of repute pursed their lips.

Britain did worse. It sent through Parliament a bill making it illegal for anyone to boycott Israel for its atrocities. Even boycotting goods produced in occupied Palestinian territories is considered anti-Semitic by the bill.

In pleasing the Zionists, England is not discerning in its English language. The Jews aren't the only Semites. The Arabs are, too.

The timing of the bill and the bombardments is not a coincidence. Everything about Israel is planned in Tel Aviv, London, Washington or Brussels.

The West never wants peace in the Middle East. It only wants a piece of it. Peace-loving members of the world community mustn't allow this.

The hegemony of the West must be stopped. But there are two problems. One is a problem within, and the other is a problem without.

Start with the problem that is internal to Muslim countries. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has 57 members, including Palestine, but some of these have seen fit to establish diplomatic and economic relations with the Zionist regime.

Yes, even as the Israelis bombard the Palestinians out of existence. This only emboldens Tel Aviv's impunity. Little wonder an Israeli Defence Forces soldier sends a bullet through the head of a Palestinian as its foreign minister shakes hands with his Moroccan opposite number.

Plus, the OIC has caught the Asean disease of being divided into camps. Speaking with one voice, especially on the Palestinian cause, is a thing of the past.

Perhaps they have forgotten that people come together to be united, not to be divided. Puzzling still is how they have missed the meaning of the word "cooperation" in its name, which is supposed to give sense to OIC's purpose.

This happens when a part is given prominence over the whole. The OIC must stand united because its enemies are.

Now for the problem without. This is a hard one. The world needs an alternative to the United Nations (UN) because it has, like its predecessor, the League of Nations, failed us.

The UN General Assembly is a toothless tiger. Its roar is a mere moan. The UN Security Council, with veto-wielding members at war with each other, is as good as walking dead.

As most of the problems of the world appear to have their origins in the West, perhaps a United Nations of the East is an idea whose time has come.
