NST Leader: When the pen becomes the sword

There is only one country that can stop the atrocities being committed by Israel: the United States. Sadly, it doesn't want to.

Evidence? The repeated vetoing by the US of the United Nations Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire and its continued supply of weapons to Tel Aviv are two blazingly clear examples. Still, the US administration can be compelled by the American public to stop Israel's atrocities as they did in the Vietnam war.

There is no other logical avenue left to end the Israeli genocide of the Palestinians. But first, an obstacle needs to be overcome: war-mongering mainstream media that have been rallying the American public against the Palestinians, especially since Oct 7, 2023.

"Rallying" doesn't quite do justice to the act of the wayward American pen. Incitement does. Editorials, op-eds and news analyses are flooded with diction urging dispossession and destruction of all things Palestinian. What is worse, the media have become echo chambers of the powerful, not just in Washington, but also of those as far away as Tel Aviv.

The Zionists there say all Palestinians are terrorists and the American media regurgitates those words. Never mind if the Palestinians are babies, children or women. The fact that they are Palestinians or Arabs is enough. They are all terrorists.

As long ago as 1981, the world-renowned Edward Said, the Palestinian Christian scholar, warned of how dangerous these shapers of human thought were in his book, Covering Islam.

Two decades later, the late Robert Fisk, one of the world's most acclaimed journalists, would issue the same warning in his 1,368-page book, The Great War For Civilisation. In it he wrote of the American journalists who report in so craven a fashion from the Middle East, being "so fearful" of Israeli criticism that they turn Israeli murders into "targeted attacks" and illegal settlements into "Jewish neighbourhoods".

But there is hope. A growing section of the American public, having seen Israeli genocide live-streamed into their homes, have begun to see the American media's false narratives. And the good news is that they are countering these narratives with theirs in the alternative media.

Scholar-philosopher Noam Chomsky in the US and Gideon Levy, a member of the editorial board of the Israeli English daily Haaretz in Tel Aviv, are two writers whose brave prose has continued to speak truth to power.

On a speaking engagement in New York, Levy brought some journalists in his audience to their senses with this one line: "With friends like Israel, America doesn't need an enemy". If only President Joe Biden and his administration understood the wisdom of Levy's one line, the Middle East would not be the muddle that it is.

Others have joined the two by asking a Fisk-like question: what do the cruelly imprisoned Palestinians in Gaza have to do with the crimes committed on Sept 11, 2001? Nothing was Fisk's answer.

But the Zionists in Tel Aviv and the Israeli lobby in the US have managed to get the mainstream media to stand with Benjamin Netanyahu in his genocidal campaign against the Palestinians by manipulating American grief. But not for long. Sanity is beginning to surface. Americans are beginning to wake up to the truth that they have been lied to for the longest time.
