HRDC board lacks big guns

LETTERS: I refer to the letter, "Employers question lack of consultation" (NST, July 15), by Roslan Sharif. I agree with him.

First, allow me to draw attention to the Human Resources Development Fund Act 2001. It states that HRD Corp's board shall consist of 10 employers' representatives.

Without going into details and naming any member(s), the composition of the board does not match the provisions of the act.

Second, when we talk about employers' representatives, it would be common sense to expect the appointment of members who represent large organisations with large membership.

However, representatives from small businesses and entities with an equally small number of employees are included.

Then, we have the odd absence of foreign chambers of commerce.

It baffles me that they have been left out as the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (Mida) has been wooing foreign direct investment for the longest time.

A federal agency like Mida spends hundreds of millions of ringgit annually to maintain its offices and presence in 12 regions and 20 countries to promote bilateral trade and strengthen our nation's commercial appeal.

Foreign companies employ hundreds of thousands of Malaysians. I'm sure they are competent and relevant enough to be included in the board.

Investors are watching us. The exodus and relocation of multinational companies does not bode well for the country.
