Improve road safety with stricter rules on lorry loads

LETTERS: Road users face risks from trucks or lorries dropping stones on roads or highways that can damage other vehicles.

This week, I had to change my front screen because stones from lorries hit my vehicle twice. My insurance policy covers screen damage up to RM1,000, but the replacement cost me RM1,200.

I have to fork out the extra RM200 and pay for the new window tint and RFID sticker.

Because of this, my only car has to go to the workshop. I end up losing time money.

I can only claim one screen a year. If this happens again, I will have to spend more.

My friends have faced similar situations with stones. So I am not alone and many people have felt the same pain.

We urge the construction industry not to overfill lorries to reap maximum profit.

They should care more about road users' safety and the losses and hassle caused by falling stones.

It is my hope that highway operators will practice more care with lorries carrying stones.

My suggestions on the matter are as follows:

ENACT stricter by-laws and regulations on the weight and height limit of lorry loads. Encourage the use of canvases to prevent stones from falling. Make lorries use normal roads, not highways.

GET enforcement agencies to conduct checks at toll booths and stop overloaded lorries from entering highways.

IMPOSE heavier fines for owners found guilty of overloading lorries.
