The Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association (REHDA) Malaysia says tightening the Movement Control Order (MCO) 3.0 effective May 25, 2021, will delay construction works thus affecting the delivery of property projects which have set completion dates.
Rehda president Datuk Soam Heng Choon also said the necessary amendments are critical to addressing the various problems that may arise, and at the same time protect all the affected contracted parties.
"As the continuous spike of Covid-19 cases in the country needs to be addressed urgently, Rehda lauds the efforts taken by the government to tighten MCO 3.0. Our association is appreciative of the government's efforts in ensuring public health care is given utmost priority and at the same time creates an environment where the livelihood of the Rakyat are safeguarded," he said in a statement issued today.
Soam said the association understands the need for collective efforts from all parties to curb the pandemic.
He said that Rehda members vow to continue ensuring that all developers and construction sites abide by the tightened standard operating procedure (SOP) without exception.
"However, Rehda would like to reiterate that as the number of cases continues to rise thus necessitating a prolonged MCO similar to last year's, the various restrictions have had a direct impact on the wellbeing of the industry and recovery of the nation's economy. We, therefore, wish to call upon the government to amend the Temporary Measures for Reducing the Impact of Coronavirus Diseases 2019 (COVID-19) Act (Act 829) which was gazetted in October last year," Soam said.
Soam said as the leading voice for property developers in Malaysia, Rehda will continue to work together with the authorities to protect the welfare of the industry, all stakeholders, the Rakyat, and the nation.
