Malaysia assured of badminton gold, silver in women's singles

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia are guaranteed of a gold and silver medal in the women's singles event after Goh Jin Wei and Soniia Cheah made it to the final today.

Soniia, making her debut in the individual event saw off Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 22-20, 21-13 in the first semi-final before 2015 world junior champion Jin Wei upset third seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand 21-9, 10-21, 21-18.

At the previous edition in Singapore two years ago, Jin Wei settled for the bronze medal.

The last time Malaysia won gold in the women's singles event was back in 2003 (Vietnam) through Wong Mew Choo.

Last week, Malaysia settled for the silver in both the men's and women's team event.
