Indonesia look to doubles for glory

BANGKOK: Apart from World No 1 Macus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, who suffered a shock defeat to Thailand's Kittisak Namdash-Nipitphon Phuangphuapet on Tuesday, Indonesia have yet to drop a point in men's doubles, and they will be banking on their pairs in Thursday’s Thomas Cup quarter-finals.

With a lineup that boast the likes of former world champions Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan and World No 12 Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto, Indonesia will be looking to get off the blocks fast through their first singles Anthony Sinisuka Ginting who can set the tone for the rest of his teammates.

On Wednesday, the 13-time champions saw off South Korea 3-2 to top Group B thanks to their pairs.

Marcus-Kevin were once again pushed to the limit but walked away with a 21-11, 14-21, 21-10 win over Chung Eui Seok-Kim Won Ho.

Ahsan-Hendra managed to keep a cool head to score a 21-14, 18-21, 21-15 win over Choi Solgyu-Kim Dukyoung to confirm Indonesia’s win.

"We are strong in the doubles and it is our duty to deliver two points for the team in every tie,” said Hendra.

"The mission is to keep on winning in the knockout stage.”

On the team's strength in the men's singles, Ahsan added: "Of course, we hope for everyone to win. Whoever delivers a point is good for us.

"After all, our singles players are no juniors, and have experience. We will take it one tie at a time."

Indonesia’s singles players comprise Anthony, Jonatan Christie, Firman Abdul Kholik and Ihsan Maulana Mustofa.
