Wei above the rest

GOH Jin Wei is indeed a class above, especially when compared to other players her age.

The 18-year-old shuttler, was almost unstoppable in the girls' singles semi-finals on Saturday when she sent top seed, Wang Zhiyi of China packing with a 21-9, 21-13 win at the World Junior Championships in Markham, Canada.

National junior head coach, Kwan Yoke Meng only had nice things to say about the young player, whom he believes could go on to win her second crown.

Jin Wei, who won the World Junior title in 2015, was scheduled to play 15th seed, Line Christophersen of Denmark in the final, this morning.

"Jin Wei is at a different level. Her style of play is a class above at junior level. Her game is very smart.

"She controlled her opponent (Zhiyi) so well and did not rush to end the match.

"Jin Wei's composure drove Zhiyi into make too many mistakes," said Yoke Meng, when contacted.

There was more joy for the Malaysian camp, as girls' doubles, Pearly Tan-Toh Ee Wei also reached the final (yesterday morning) following a 21-19- 21-19 win over Indonesia's Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma-Ribka Sugiarto in the last four.

A win in the final would see Pearly-Ee Wei become the first Malaysian girls’ doubles to win a world junior title since the tournament's inception in 1992.

Pearly-Ee Wei, were to face top seeds, Liu Xuanxuan-Xia Yuting of China for the crown.

"Pearly-Ee Wei were not at their best in the semi-finals. I really hope they can bring out their best game to make history by becoming the first Malaysian girls' doubles to win the title," added Yoke Meng.
