World junior champ Jin Wei aims for senior challenge

KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Goh Jin Wei admits she still has a long way to go despite winning the World Junior Championships title in Markham, Canada, yesterday.

The 18-year-old girls' singles bagged her second world title after first winning it in 2015, when she saw off Denmark's Line Christophersen 21-13, 21-11 in the final at the Pan Am Centre.

Just last month, the Penang-born was also crowned as Youth Olympic Games (YOG) champion in Buenos Aires, capping a brilliant final year as a junior shuttler.

Jin Wei, however, chose to remain grounded, acknowledging that things will only get tougher for her in the future.

"There is a huge difference between the junior and senior level. I am still not there yet," said Jin Wei, who is currently ranked World No 28 on the senior rankings.

"It will only get tougher for me from now. I need to head back and start working on my weaknesses.

"I need to catch up with the World top 20 players," added Jin Wei.

The 2017 Sea Games gold medallist will have no time to rest on her laurels, as she travels to Gwanju next week for the Korea Masters. Jin Wei opens her campaign in the first round against Soraya De Visch Eijbergen of the Netherlands.

On whether she's ready for the Olympic qualifying period next year (May), Jin Wei said: "Yes, I have got nothing to lose, I will do my best."

Apart from Jin Wei, the other Malaysian women's singles shuttler who will be fighting for an Olympic berth is World No 30 Soniia Cheah.
