Shuttler Jin Wei records biggest career win at Malaysia Masters

KUALA LUMPUR: After notching her biggest career win on Wednesday, national shuttler Goh Jin Wei now believes she can slowly conquer the world.

In the first round of the Malaysia Masters women's singles event, Jin Wei scored her maiden win over a top five shuttler by overcoming fifth-ranked Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 21-14, 21-12.

The win also sees Jin Wei being Malaysia's sole representative in the event following the exit of compatriots Soniia Cheah and Lee Ying Ying.

When asked if the victory will spur her to beat other top ranked players, the two-time world junior champion said: "Previously, I was easy meat for players like Carolina Marin (Spain) and P.V. Sindhu (India), so hopefully I can slowly turn the tables around.

"Going up against Yamaguchi, I wasn't expecting much but I enjoyed my game. My opponent seemed a little tensed, but I played well to deserve the win.

"The fact that my teammates did not make it through also fired me to do better.

After several years of inconsistency, Jin Wei seemed to have transformed into a different player after winning the Youth Olympic Games (Argentina) and World Junior Championships (Canada) titles in 2018.

"Winning the two tournaments last year has definitely made me a mature player.

"People may argue that they were junior tournaments but I learned a lot from them. I'm not a completely different player but I am getting better," added the 19-year-old shuttler, who play China's Zhang Yiman in the second round on Thursday.
