KL Closed set to draw a record number of shuttlers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Closed Jejak Juara is set to make its way into the Malaysia Book of Records with more than 3,500 shuttlers.

While the main focus of the competition next month is to unearth new talent, Kuala Lumpur Badminton Association (KLBA) president Datuk Seri Jahaberdeen Yunoos wants the event, which is part of the Jejak Juara blueprint from 2022-2027, to be a trendsetter.

"The Jejak Juara project is a KLBA blueprint that has four main elements: development, tournaments, President's scholarship, and the KL International Badminton Academy.

"These four elements are also the pillars to ensure this programme is comprehensive and systematic in producing top talent from KL.

"I am confident that with the support shown by the KLBA, government agencies, as well as those from the corporate sector, we will be able to produce many top athletes of national and international standards," said Jahaberdeen.

The KL Closed Jejak Juara is scheduled for May 20-28 at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Bintang Selatan.

The competition (boys' and girls' singles) will see 292 schools in Kuala Lumpur competing in the Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 categories.

Apart from working closely with the Federal Territories' Education Department, KLBA also welcomed a huge shot in the arm from Asia Media Group (AMG), who came on board as one of the sponsors for the event.

The launch ceremony yesterday was graced by AMG chief executive officer Gan Chia Hong, Federal Territories' Education Department director Norhayati Wahab, and Badminton Association of Malaysia secretary general Datuk Kenny Goh.
