Indonesia have the depth and talent to win the Thomas Cup for record 15th time

If their group campaign is any indication, Indonesia appear to have the right ingredients to win the Thomas Cup for a record-extending 15th time.

Indonesia, buoyed after beating defending champions India 3-1 to top Group C, will seek to continue their fine run in Chengdu when they go up against South Korea today.

The win against India was indeed a morale booster as they exacted sweet revenge for their tame 3-0 defeat in the final to India, who went on to hoist the historic Cup in Bangkok two years ago.

But in the bigger picture, Indonesia showed they possessed formidable squad depth, not necessarily relying on a particular player or pair to win points.

Against India, for instance, despite Anthony Ginting's surprise defeat by H.S. Prannoy in the opening singles, they managed to equalise through their second-choice pair Shobihul Fikri-Bagas Maulana, who rose to the occasion to beat Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty.

This shows that Indonesia had the luxury of opting for Shobihul-Bagas in the first doubles role, given their top pair Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto's poor record against Satwiksairaj-Chirag.

Fajar-Rian came under fire after losing to world No. 52 Peeratchai Sukphun-Pakkapon Teeraratsakul in Indonesia's 4-1 win against Thailand.

With in-form Jonatan Christie in the second singles and Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin ever ready to come in for the second doubles role, Indonesia look more than capable of wrapping up their win in the knockout stage at 3-0 or 4-1.

South Korea are unlikely to overcome Indonesia unless one of their three singles players produces something extraordinary to steal a point.

South Korea gave China a run for their money before going down 3-2 in the top-of-the-table clash in Group A on Tuesday, with two points coming from their powerful doubles department.

While Kang Min Hyuk-Seo Seung Jae's win over world No. 1 Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang won't raise any eyebrows, it was their second combination, the newly paired world No. 303 Kim Won Ho-Kim Dong Ju, whose victory against world No. 8 Liu Yu Chen Ou Xuan Yi had been nothing short of remarkable.

The Koreans have traditionally relied heavily on their doubles in the Thomas Cup, always able to come up with strong scratch combinations by mixing and matching the players at their disposal.

Denmark, who topped Group D ahead of Malaysia, should beat Taiwan with ease in the other quarter-finals of the day.
