Tang Jie-Ee Wei's statement win underlines title credentials at Paris 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei showed they are in Paris to stand on the Olympic podium following their statement win over China's second seeds Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping on Monday.

The world No. 9 upset world No. 2 Yan Zhe-Dong Ping 17-21, 21-15, 21-16 to top Group D with a flawless record of three wins at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.

It was also their second win over the Chinese pair in four meetings.

The Malaysian debutants defeated Singapore's Terry Hee-Jessica Tan on Saturday and Vinson Chiu-Jennie Gai of the United States on Sunday to secure their quarter-final spot.

Notably, Dong Ping won the mixed doubles gold medal at Tokyo 2020 with former partner Wang Yilyu.

Ee Wei said her communication with Tang Jie on the court was key to their victory on Monday.

"Yan Zhe-Dong Ping played a really good game and pushed us to the maximum," said Ee Wei.

"However, we fought back by communicating a lot during the game, which contributed to our victory."

Tang Jie added: "We played to our strategy and were confident on the court.

"However, we have a few more things to work on. The crucial factor is we must continue to believe in our ability."

Tang Jie-Ee Wei also thanked Lim Jun Xuan, a mental health officer from the National Sports Institute, for helping them gel as a pair.

"Before this, we used to keep to ourselves. However, after the sessions with Jun Xuan, we now communicate better and gel better as a pair.

"I think this has helped us perform well in competitions," Ee Wei added.
