KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has congratulated shuttler Cheah Liek Hou on becoming a millionaire following his gold medal win at the Paris Paralympics yesterday (Sep 2).
Yeoh said she was excited to hear Negaraku being played at La Chapelle Arena and hopes Liek Hou's victory will inspire other national athletes in the contingent.
"I would like to congratulate coach Nova Armada and Liek Hou for winning the contingent's first gold medal of the Paris Olympics," said Yeoh yesterday.
"We hope the other athletes will continue achieving success tomorrow (today)."
Yeoh said para athletes receive the same RM1 million incentive for winning gold as able-bodied athletes in the Olympics through the National Sports Incentive Scheme (Shakam)
"Just like the Olympics, gold medallists at the Paralympics will also receive an RM1 million incentive. Coaches will also get 20 per cent through Shakam," added Yeoh.
"This is Liek Hou's second gold so he is a millionaire now.
"I hope the others, including Fareez Anuar, will not give up because they are still young and can look forward to Los Angeles 2028."
Fareez missed out on bronze in the same men's singles SU5 category as Liek Hou after losing to Indonesia's Dheva Anrimusthi 17-21, 21-19, 21-12.
