Two Malaysian pairs fall in Macau Open semi-finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian shuttlers' hopes of reaching the Macau Open final came to an end today.

After mixed doubles Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin bowed out in the semi-finals earlier in the day with a 21-15, 17-21, 21-14 loss to Indonesia's Dejan Ferdinanshah-Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja, compatriots Tan Wee Kiong-Nur Azriyn Ayub met the same fate in the men's doubles last four.

The world No. 46 lost to Indonesia's world No. 17 Moh Reza Pahlevi-Sabar Karyaman 21-12, 21-19 at the Macau East Asian Games Dome.

Though Wee Kiong-Nur Azriyn defeated Moh Reza-Sabar at the KL Masters last year, this time it was the younger Indonesians who turned the tables on the Malaysians.

Moh Reza, 26, and Sabar, 28, raced ahead to win the first game before Wee Kiong, 35, and Azriyn, 31, tried to stage a fightback in the second game.

However, the Indonesians had more gas in their tank, and will meet China's Chen Xu Jun-Liu Yi in the final tomorrow.

A disappointed Wee Kiong said: "In the first game, we couldn't get our rhythm going.

"We tried to come back in the second game but there were some errors in our play that forced the game into a point-to point situation."

World No. 29 Pang Ron-Su Yin couldn't keep their momentum going against No. 11 Dejan-Gloria. The Malaysian duo, who were quarter-finalists at the Hong Kong Open and China Open recently, had stunned Hong Kong's top seeds and world No. 8 Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet in the quarter-finals on Friday.

In the title decider, Dejan-Gloria will take on China's fifth seeds Guo Xin Wa-Chen Fang Hui, who beat Taiwan's Ye Hong Wei-Nicole Gonzales Chan 21-12, 21-11 in the semifinals.
