Poor batting costs Malaysia in Bangladesh thrashing at T20 Asia Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia suffered a crushing 120-run defeat to Bangladesh in their Group A match of the ACC Women's Under-19 T20 Asia Cup at the Bayuemas Cricket Oval in Klang today.

Bangladesh, who won the toss and elected to bat, posted a solid total of 149 for five.

In response, Malaysia collapsed, managing only 29 runs before being bowled out in 14.5 overs with 31 balls to spare.

Bangladesh's Janatul Maoua top-scored with 47 runs, while Nishita Akter Nishi delivered a superb bowling performance, claiming five wickets.

Habiba Islam and Farjana Easmin chipped in with three and two wickets, respectively.

It was Malaysia's second consecutive defeat, following their 94-run loss to Sri Lanka on Sunday.

The result left Malaysia bottom of the group and out of the semi-finals.

Bangladesh topped Group A with two wins and advanced to the semi-finals alongside Sri Lanka.

Malaysia will now face Pakistan in a playoff for fifth place tomorrow.

Malaysian Cricket Association development director Rozlan Abdul Alim Sidique admitted the absence of key players hurt their chances.

"Nur Izzatul Syafiqa needed four stitches on her right finger, and Irdina Beh Nabil is still recovering from a left thumb injury sustained during Sunday's match against Sri Lanka.

"Against Bangladesh, we were let down by poor batting. This team have to work harder to prepare for the Junior World Cup, which will be hosted here," said Rozlan.
